Cheltenham Festival Racing

Cheltenham Festival - The History

The Cheltenham Festival is a prestigious horse racing meeting within the National Hunt racing schedule in the United Kingdom and offers prize money to winners that can only be rivalled by that of the Grand National, making this truly one of the biggest and most anticipated races within the calendar for trainers, riders and spectators alike.

The race meet was first established back in 1860, formerly known as the National Hunt Chase and was held at Market Harborough before moving throughout a number of different locations before returning to its current home Cheltenham in 1904, although records show that the earliest record that features the name of 'Cheltenham Festival' was back in 1907 within the Warwick Advertiser.

Already a popular horse racing location, the Festival soon created the Cheltenham Gold Cup back in 1924 and furthermore added additional races to their schedule as the years passed, the Champion Hurdle being born in 1927 and others were to follow.

Up until 2005 the Cheltenham Festival was a three day racing event but after that year the racing meet was increased to 4 days in order to ensure that there was a championship race performed on each day with the fourth and final day being that of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, a popular racing day with anyone who follows or participates in the sport.
